Makassar 14/9/2026 —Indonesian Muslim University (UMI) continues to encourage strengthening the protection and downstreaming of research results by increasing the capacity of the academic community in the field of intellectual property (KI).
This commitment is realized through activitiesTechnical Guidance on Writing Patent Descriptions to Support Downstreaming in the Context of Strengthening the Duties and Functions of Higher Education IP Centerswhich will be held on 14–18 September 2026 in the 5th Floor Hall of the UMI Medical Faculty Building, Makassar.
This activity is a collaborationUMI Resource Research and Development Institute (LP2S).togetherDirectorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) Ministry of Law, by involving researchers, lecturers and inventors within UMI.
This technical guidance provides space for participants to deepen their understanding of the preparation of patent specifications and descriptions, including technical aspects related to the substantive examination process. It is hoped that this assistance can help inventors produce patent application documents that are more systematic and in accordance with the provisions.
DJKI Principal Expert Patent Examiner,Johani Siregar, representing the Director of Patents, Integrated Circuit Layout Design and Trade Secrets of DJKI, said that understanding the substantive examination process is an important part in preparing a patent application.
According to him, this activity not only provides an understanding of the procedures for preparing documents, but also opens up opportunities for inventors to discuss directly the inventions they are developing.
Through this mentoring process, participants are expected to be able to identify aspects of novelty and prepare more precise descriptions of inventions so as to strengthen the quality of protection for research results.
Support for this activity was also provided bySouth Sulawesi Ministry of Law Regional Office. The presence of the South Sulawesi Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Law shows the importance of synergy between the government and universities in building an intellectual property ecosystem that supports the development of research and innovation.
Head of Regional Office of the Ministry of Law, South Sulawesi,Andi Basmal, expressed his support for increasing the ability of university researchers and inventors in compiling patent documents. Strengthening this capacity is considered important so that research results do not just stop as academic work, but can receive legal protection and be developed further.
In line with this, UMI continues to strengthen its roleKI Centeras part of the campus research and innovation ecosystem. Research results that have invention potential are directed towards obtaining intellectual property protection while also having the opportunity to be developed towards the downstream stage.
This activity is expected to be part of sustainable steps in improving the quality of patent management within UMI, as well as strengthening relations between universities, government, researchers, inventors and the industrial world.
By increasing technical capabilities in preparing patent descriptions, it is hoped that various research results and innovations from the UMI academic community will have a stronger basis for IP protection as well as wider utilization opportunities for society and the industrial world.
