Makassar, 16 April 2026 — The Institute for Research and Development of Resources (LP2S) of the Indonesian Muslim University (UMI) has established strategic collaboration with the South Sulawesi Regional Office of the Ministry of Law in the field of strengthening services, management and downstreaming of intellectual property through the UMI Intellectual Property Center (Sentra KI).

The Cooperation Agreement (PKS) was signed by the Head of the Legal Services Division of the South Sulawesi Ministry of Law Regional Office, Demson Marihot, S.E., as the FIRST PARTY and the Chair of LP2S UMI, Prof. Dr. H. Baharuddin Semmaila, SE., M.Sc., as SECOND PARTY, located in Makassar City.

In this activity, the UMI LP2S Secretary, Prof. Dr. Ir. Andi Aladin, MT., IPM., and Head of UMI Cooperation, Rizki Ramadhani, SH., MH., as part of the team to strengthen institutional collaboration and develop strategic cooperation.

This collaboration is a concrete step in supporting the strengthening of the tridharma of higher education as well as the protection and utilization of intellectual property in the academic environment. In addition, this collaboration is a follow-up to the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Law and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology regarding support for the implementation of duties and functions in the fields of law, higher education, science and technology.

Through this agreement, both parties agreed to strengthen various aspects of intellectual property management, starting from protecting and utilizing IP, disseminating information and education, developing human resources, to downstreaming and commercializing research-based innovation.

The scope of cooperation also includes prototype development, technology validation, market readiness, licensing schemes, establishing spin-offs, fostering research-based startups, as well as strengthening governance and intellectual property infrastructure within UMI. Apart from that, the UMI KI Center will be optimized as a center for consultation services, assistance and facilitation of intellectual property registration for academics and the general public.

Head of the Legal Services Division of the Regional Office of the South Sulawesi Ministry of Law, Demson Marihot, S.E., said that universities have an important role in producing innovations that have strategic value and need to obtain adequate legal protection.

"This collaboration is expected to increase awareness and understanding of the importance of intellectual property, as well as strengthen the downstreaming of research results so that they can provide economic and social benefits for society," he said.

Meanwhile, Chairman of LP2S UMI, Prof. Dr. H. Baharuddin Semmaila, SE., M.Si., emphasized that this collaboration is part of UMI's commitment to encouraging a culture of innovation, research and community service that is oriented towards benefit and global competitiveness.

"By strengthening the UMI KI Center, we hope that the results of research and innovation of the academic community will not only be legally protected, but will also be able to be developed into products and services that are of value for society," he said.

This Cooperation Agreement is valid for five years and will be implemented through various collaborative programs, including outreach, dissemination, training, technical assistance, strengthening human resource capacity, as well as regular monitoring and evaluation.

With this synergy, LP2S UMI and the South Sulawesi Ministry of Law Regional Office are optimistic that they can build a stronger, more innovative and sustainable intellectual property ecosystem to support the progress of higher education and research development in Indonesia.
